We're On The Watch, Too
Six weeks of intense military training for Cadet Candidates at West Point come to an end in the oppressive summer heat of the Hudson Valley region of New York with a 12-mile march back to the Academy. Cadet Basic Training, which is designed to prepare newcomers for entry into the Corps of Cadets, is officially complete. Beast Week, the most intensive of the six training weeks, has been slayed we say.
As the long last trek back to the Academy grounds begins, each Cadet rings a bell in celebration that they have prevailed. Old grads will join the Cadets on their March Back which will include carrying a banner that proudly displays their newly chosen class motto.
Summer training means that West Point parents have most likely not heard or seen from their cadets most of the time, with the exception generally of a call that comes at the middle of training in mid-July. Some parents will be able to travel to New York to experience March Back themselves while others will have to stay home in Central Florida and watch with us as these awesome candidates complete the time-honored tradition of Cadet Basic Training and are formally accepted into the Corps of Cadets in another ceremony that is chalked full of yet more pomp and circumstance.
We call this day, A-Day or Acceptance Day.
Either way, we will be watching on both days are our cadet candidates become simply, Cadet.
The class of 2024's March Back can be seen here. The class of 2025 will be marching back in August 2021. If you would like to join us for a watch party, you are welcome to come celebrate their important milestone with us.
