A Taste of the Academy
Half way through Cadet Basic Training during that first really hot summer at West Point, our Candidate Cadets are given a break from their intensive training with an event that we all normally call, the Ice Cream Social. Candidate Cadets are still not permitted to leave post, and parents are not provided the opportunity to see their Cadet Candidates face-to-face, so Ice Cream Socials are hosted both here and there for each of the parties involved.
Many Cadet Candidates will be able to get away for a few hours and visit the nearby homes of their Academy sponsors. With still shaven heads and closely cropped hair, Candidate Cadets are afforded the opportunity for a few hours to eat, drink refreshments, meet other new cadets and make phone calls home. Those phone calls home go to the anxious parents back in Central Florida at the local Ice Cream Social who cannot wait to talk to their sons and daughters who have been out of radio contact for three weeks.
New cadets also get the opportunity to talk with other cadets to compare notes about R-Day (Reception Day where the cadets are fully accepted into the Corps of Cadets), how their training is going, especially the new Soldier First Response (advanced first aid) training the new cadets just completed.
The Ice Cream Social represents a major milestone in a new cadet's journey at West Point. This year, however, our Central Florida parents have opted to mix things up a bit, so our traditional Ice Cream Social has been replaced by the Big Donut Social. A mouthwatering treat is still on the menu, as you can see and we invite you to join us Saturday, July 17th for some gigantic donuts thanks to our 2021 hosts, Splitsville Luxury Lanes Orlando at Disney Springs. We promise these donuts will tantalize your taste buds and introduce you to life at the Academy. Munching starts at 11 am!
Parking is available in the Orange Garage which is closest to Splitsville's luxury bowling lanes. Our cadets are rucking back at West Point, but parents, family, and friends don't have to! Space is limited, so please reserve your really big donuts now!
We hope to see you there!
